Magicians-- Wizards or Weirdos?
It's a Saturday morning. The sun's shining and the mood is high. I head to a local restaurant with a group of friends to celebrate such a beautiful day with a fun brunch. We pull in, head inside, sit down, and order our food. Everything is completely, 100% normal.
Until.
A man approaches our table, not a waiter or a host, just another customer. He swiftly presents to us a deck of cards and offers to show us magic--real, true magic. How could we deny that! After around 30 minutes of card trick after card trick I got to thinking, how the heck is he doing all this? It was impressive, entertaining, and made for a unique brunch.
Preface--I consider myself a averagely smart person. I like to figure out things. But even after 30 minutes of card tricks, I couldn't figure the magician man out. He had me utterly and completely stumped. His tricks were fluid and executed with ease. Time and time again I found myself shocked by a simple deck of cards being manipulated by a mystery man.
There was only one explanation then to tackle the ambiguity that ate at my mind; this man was truly magic. I couldn't boil it down to any other explanation. That was it! And if my 21st century self could be convinced magic was real on a Saturday morning, then I now see how Salem could be convinced all the same. Lucky for me, this magic was harmless, fun, and entertaining. Salem on the other hand believed in a magic that was darker, eviler, and used for majority malice. It wasn't a funny story for the weekend, but it was a life-altering fear that plagued the city. Their questions of "how" and "why" were explained not by science, reason, medicine, or things we see in modernity. Instead, they were explained by succumbing to the belief of "witchiness." It was the only thing that made sense to the Puritan mind.
I now get it a little more than before. On my Saturday morning, real, true magic was the only thing that was able to explain what I was seeing before my eyes. Just like the city of Salem, I wanted an answer so I grasped for the closest reasoning. I left the restaurant a little more convinced in the existence of fantasy. Magicians could be modern wizards. The possibility just can't ruled out.
